The Collins English Dictionary – Slot

slot

The Collins English Dictionary

A narrow opening, groove, or slit, as in a keyway or a coin slot in a vending machine. Also: a position or place in a sequence or series, as of jobs or dates.

Sports A space on a team’s roster or in the field, usually reserved for an experienced player who is used to blocking and receiving in the middle of the pack, often in the slot. A receiver who occupies a slot is more vulnerable to big hits and less likely to break off routes in a passing play.

Statistics

A slot is the unit of operation issue and data path machinery surrounding a set of execution units (also called functional units or FUs). In very long instruction word computers, the term slots is also used to refer to the relationship between an operation in an instruction and its pipeline.

Casinos

Many casinos believe that machines on the ends of aisles are more “hot” than those in the center, so they place these more desirable slots at the end of the row. However, casinos cannot guarantee a profit on every machine, and even the best machines will experience a period of unprofitability from time to time.

A great slot game will not simply rely on high RTP rates, but will combine the factors of slot volatility, bet limits, and bonus features to offer players a rewarding playing experience. This is one reason why so many online casinos have multiple slot games on their sites, each with different payback percentages targeted by the game designer.
